Dr. Stella Tsani, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, was invited as an expert to the 7th Assessment Report (AR7) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), specifically for Working Group III (WGIII), which focuses on climate change mitigation.

Dr. Stella Tsani is one of 250 invited experts from all scientific disciplines and from more than 70 countries who met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 9 to 13 December to outline the contributions of the three Working Groups to the 7th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Together with other leading scientists in their field, Stella Tsani contributed to the "critical first step in shaping the content of the next report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that compiles and assesses the science related to climate change", as the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Jim Skea, characteristically describes.

The participation of Dr. Stella Tsani is a significant academic commitment with policy implications, as the meeting is a crucial part of the report development process, where experts discuss the structure, key questions and focus areas of the upcoming report. The meeting provides drafts for the Working Groups. The drafts of the Working Groups’ contributions to AR7 will be distributed to governments and submitted for consideration and agreement at the Working Group meetings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and its 62nd session, scheduled to take place in February 2025.

The IPCC Working Group Leaders, together with the IPCC Chair, selected the experts to participate in this meeting, taking into account nominations received from governments, observer organizations and members of the Bureau. Dr. Stella Tsani’s nomination was submitted by the Global Young Academy and the International Science Council, scientific associations of which Dr. Tsani is a member.

Her candidacy and participation in the meeting highlight the orientation of Dr. Tsani’s scientific work towards the formulation of scientifically informed policy in areas such as sustainable development, energy policy, economic transitions and resource management, which remain central points of reference in the work of the Working Group WGIII. Dr. Tsani’s contributions are expected to help shape the report on the economic, financial and political transformations required to mitigate climate change, in particular through sustainable and innovative practices in energy and natural resource management.
