The Athens College - Psychiko College Alumni Association (SAKA), in collaboration with the Hellenic Network for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, based at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, is organizing a Conference on "Environment, Climate Change and Energy: Challenges and Contradictions", which will take place on March 28, 2025 at the Athens College Theater.
The Conference is part of the events celebrating the Centennial of Athens College, which celebrates a century of contribution by Athens College to Education and Society in Greece, and is addressed to graduates, students, the wider College family, undergraduate and postgraduate students of universities, and interested citizens.
The Conference focuses on the contemporary challenges facing society, the economy and the natural environment due to climate change and its impacts. The thematic sections of the Conference cover a wide range of concerns. The relationship between climate change and the energy transition and modern technological developments will be examined. In addition, the economic, social and environmental dimensions of climate change, the role of democracy in sustainable development and related social justice issues will be explored. A significant part of the Conference will focus on businesses and their role in the climate crisis, with particular emphasis on the shipping sector. Finally, the use of artificial intelligence in addressing the climate crisis will be explored and its energy and environmental impacts will be examined.
Within the framework of the Conference, participants will have the opportunity to participate in the process of Deliberative Democracy, where questions will be raised for discussion and consultation, highlighting the importance of the active participation of citizens in examining and resolving important issues in society.
The Scientific Committee of the Conference, chaired by Professor Andreas Papandreou of the Department of Economics of the National University of Athens, has ensured the participation of distinguished scientists, lawyers, businessmen, politicians and economists, who will present their knowledge and proposals. The thematic sections will be coordinated by experienced specialist scientists.
