Β. LABORATORY FOR EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL THEORIES

Director: Professor Yanis Varoufakis

It is the first laboratory in Greece where experimental studies are carried out, under strict laboratory conditions, in economic and social theory. The experimental approach to basic issues of economics is based on the observation of the behaviour of individuals under laboratory conditions in order to empirically study, verify or reject specific economic and social theories. Individuals (a) are selected according to specific criteria, (b) communicate with each other by computer within a framework of rules defined by the researchers, (c) are rewarded according to rules which aim to provide individuals with appropriate incentives to behave in a way that demonstrates the correctness or otherwise of the theories under consideration.

Similar experience abroad: Since the 1980s, experimental economics has emerged as a major research discipline which, combined with the growing importance of game theory, has become a strong attraction within economic theory. There is no renowned department of economics that does not have a laboratory for experimental studies. The results of their studies are published in reputed international journals and are discussed in seminars, symposia and conferences worldwide. Members of the Laboratory of Experimental Studies in Economic and Social Theories of the University of Athens have been at the forefront in establishing two such laboratories abroad.
