Why should someone study Economics at EKPA?

Why study Economics?

Economics is a fascinating and complex science that combines analysis, logic and understanding of human behaviour. They help us to explain how the world around us works - how economic decisions are made, how businesses and markets are organised, and how our choices affect society, the environment and our future.

Understanding the modern world

By studying Economics, you will be able to interpret the forces that determine economic activity: why prices rise, how unemployment is created, what are the causes and consequences of economic crises, and how effective policies for stability and growth can be designed.

Contributing to addressing the grand challenges

Economists are at the forefront of analysing and formulating solutions to the major problems of the day: climate change, inequality, poverty, sustainable development and the digital transition. Studying Economics fosters a spirit of social responsibility and participation in public debate.

Development of critical, analytical and creative thinking

Economics offers not just knowledge, but a way of thinking. You learn to make data-driven decisions, analyse problems methodically and formulate well-founded proposals. These skills are invaluable in any professional field.

Connecting with technology, data and innovation

The modern economist uses tools of data analysis, econometrics and programming to discover cause-and-effect relationships and predict trends in the economy and markets. Economics education prepares students for the new, digital environment of economics and artificial intelligence.

Wide range of career prospects

Economists have excellent employment opportunities. They can work in banks, companies, consultancy firms, public institutions, international organisations and research institutes, or go into business. They are highly sought-after because they combine economic thinking, technological skills and the ability to understand complex socio-economic phenomena.

Economics at the University of Athens

The Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens provides integrated education of high quality, combining theoretical training, empirical analysis and emphasis on modern technological applications. Our students acquire the skills to excel in Greece and internationally, both in the labour market and in academic research.
The curriculum of the Department of Economics is pluralistic and interdisciplinary, covering a wide range of subjects: from macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis, fiscal and monetary policy, to finance, business research and econometrics. Students have the opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical applications, developing an integrated and flexible approach to the analysis of complex economic phenomena.

The Economics degree and the labour market

Students have the opportunity to delve into various disciplines of economics, such as economic theory and policy, finance and quantitative methods, and computer science. This specialisation provides them with the necessary tools for the labour market, helping them to acquire the specific knowledge needed to pursue their desired career path.

Graduates of the Department of Economics include ministers, prominent businessmen, bankers, business executives, as well as academics with international recognition.
To support the professional rehabilitation of our students, the Department of Economics has a successful internship programme and participates in the Erasmus+ programme, which offers students the possibility of mobility to a university abroad for one semester.
