The individual objectives of the course are:
• Familiarity with the main stages of Greek monetary history of the 19th and 20th centuries, with the ultimate goal of better understanding the broader economic history of the country, as well as the interactions between political and monetary developments.
• The use of the Greek case to study broader issues (state-bank relationship, monetary unions, interventionist monetary policy, etc.)
• A first contact with some more general techniques in economic history: sources, archives, economic figures and their reliability, economic history and quantitative methods, etc.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
The main characteristics and main stages of Greek monetary history are presented: the problems of the initial monetary systems of the phoenix and the othonian drachma; Greece's accession to the Latin Monetary Union (1867) and the "belated" monetary reform of 1882; the bankruptcy, the establishment of International Financial Control and the effects on monetary policy; the successive suspensions of the convertibility of banknotes in the 19th century; the role of the National Bank and its relationship with the state and other banks; the monetary adventures of the interwar period: from the gold standard and the "battle of the drachma", to the division of banknotes, bankruptcies and devaluations; the occupation and post-war hyperinflation and the stabilization of the 1950-53; the drachma in the Bretton-Woods system, etc.

Although the course will focus on the Greek experience, it will also be used as a starting point to address a number of broader economic issues, such as the relationship between state, banks and currency, the benefits and sacrifices involved in participating in a monetary union, the causes that cause "extreme" phenomena of hyperinflation or deflation, the role and responsibilities of issuing/central banks, etc. At the same time, students will have the opportunity to come into contact with some of the more general methodological issues and techniques in economic history.

CONTENT-MATERIAL: The course is mainly aimed at students with an interest in economic history, but also monetary/banking issues. Given the current situation, which shows many similarities with previous periods of fiscal and financial crisis in Greece, the course may also be of interest to a wider audience of students.
Although this is an "in-depth" course on economic history issues, attending the lectures does not require knowledge beyond basic macroeconomics of open economies (money supply, quantity theory of money, balance of payments, exchange rate systems, monetary policy, etc.). More specific knowledge of Greek or international economic history - although welcome - is not a prerequisite.

ΔΙΔΑΚΤΙΚΑ ΒΟΗΘΗΜΑΤΑ: Thomadakis, S. 1981.
