These changes directly affect the terms of trade, technological specialization and the relative increase in productivity at a global level.

In addition, the last three decades constitute a period of rapid developments in financial markets. Increased financial integration has created a new environment that significantly changes the functioning of national economies, and especially the objectives, instruments and process of exercising economic policy. The deregulation of money and capital markets and rapid technological developments have increased the mobility of capital and have made the credibility and solvency of national economic policy authorities a key criterion for evaluating the way in which globalized capital is distributed. The need for global governance and in particular the search for key pillars of a new architecture in the international financial system is a major choice for the stability of the international political economy.

Finally, exploring the relationship between globalization and the environment is very important. This relationship is complex and two-way. Globalization affects the environment, and the environment affects the pace, direction and quality of globalization. The environment provides crucial natural services and resources for economic growth and prosperity, making environmental policy crucial for managing growth and globalization. Do the current climate, energy, water and food crises show the possible natural limits of globalization? Addressing many environmental issues requires coordinated regional and global policy or governance.

The globalization of the economy affects the environment in many ways. The increase in trade and the transport of goods, the growth of economies, foreign direct investment and technology transfer (clean and dirty), the transfers of capital and workers, have an impact on both the local and global environment. How do economic growth and globalization affect the environment? Competition between countries to attract investment pushes them to reduce environmental regulations, turning them into 'pollution havens'? Environmental policies affect the structure of trade and investment, raising the question of whether the rules of international trade are compatible with the rules of environmental protection, e.g., the dispute between Europe and America over genetically modified organisms. The questions are many and crucial and the course will examine the rich research and debate around the issues of the political economy of globalization and the environment.

Understanding the aforementioned phenomena and structures of the world system in the current phase of globalization offers students valuable knowledge and information on current issues of International Political Economy. In this context, the course on the Political Economy of Globalization contributes to the formation of contemporary reflection on topical issues of our time.

Teaching aids

Cohn, Th.
